Romania received more than 550 refugees in 2016

In 2016 Romania received more than 550 refugees who fled the war in their country and came to Europe in search of a better life.

The European Union had set a quota of 2,000 immigrants for Romania and last year arrived and were given shelter 554 refugees coming through Greece and Italy, countries where these people come in Europe after travelling on sea.

“554 people from Greece and Italy were transferred to Romania in 2016, through the intra- EU relocation procedure, which after obtaining a form of protection opted to join the integration programme,” the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) with the Ministry of Interior has told Ziare.com.

Each refugee arriving in the country joins an integration programme and can benefit from the ‘A new house’ project, by which the Romanian authorities help immigrants to find a house and they cover the cost of rent and utilities. Expenses are covered by European money, through the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

“Of all the relocated persons, there are people who have benefited from the services offered by the ‘A new house’ project run by the Jesuit Refugee Service in Romania – JRS, funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, through which activities of identifying homes and covering the cost of rent and utilities are carried out,” the IGI document reads.
