The Brasov division of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a key entity within the United Nations system that fights for fair and orderly migration, recently inaugurated a photo exhibition entitled “Migrant Portrait” (Portret de Migrant in Romanian). This insightful exhibition, located at the Brașov Katya Hub, presents a series of captivating images featuring non-EU residents working, living and studying in the city of Brasov.

The exhibition aims to highlight a number of individual stories, promoting empathy and understanding among viewers. Photographer Iosif Trif, the creative eye behind these images, expressed his intention to authentically represent each person, weaving a narrative that resonates with both himself and his subjects.

The people photographed for this exhibition come from Algeria, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Kenya, Ukraine, the Dominican Republic, and beyond. Each photograph encapsulates a distinct narrative, offering optimistic glimpses into the lives of students, athletes, families and individuals seeking refuge from armed conflict in Romania.

At the opening, Trif stressed the importance of promoting a personal perspective in understanding the “other” within our global landscape. He shared that through this project, he rediscovered his own culture and country, looking at the world through the diverse experiences of those he photographed.

Iosif Trif, known for his vibrant and contemplative photographs, has previously received acclaim for his exhibition entitled “Colours of Joy” last year, a highlight of the Apollonia Culture Bank project.

The exhibition “Migrant Portrait,” a collaborative effort between Juan Carlos Prevost Maco and Monica Zurita, is open for public viewing at the Katya Hub Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Brasovians and tourists in the city are invited until the end of January to explore the visual narratives in this collection of photographs that invite reflection on empathy and common humanity.

The exhibition was made possible with the support of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) through the Migrant and Refugee Fund (MRF).
