Over 50,000 pairs of eyes have had the pleasure of viewing the Picasso Effect exhibition in the 4 months since it opened. Visitors of all ages were impressed by the 46 works by Pablo Picasso from his family’s collection, as well as by the 65 works signed by 37 contemporary Romanian artists influenced by the work of the Spanish giant.

A comprehensive catalog (The Picasso effect. Picasso’s influence on Romanian art from the 60s to the present day / bilingual volume / © MARe & Vellant, September 2023), tours of the exhibition (including guided tours by Romanian artists with works presented in the EP) , workshops for children, film screenings or an international seminar (Picassoest) with experts from 5 European countries, collaborations with the most important cultural forums, as well as exceptional strategic partnerships with private companies that have joined this huge step for the local artistic scene : an extraordinary exhibition, featuring one of the most important artists of all time. The “Picasso Effect” opened its doors on September 27, 2023 and had a major impact on the public. Originally scheduled until January 8, 2024, the exhibition was exceptionally extended, with the concurrence of the French authorities, and can be seen until January 22, 2024, at 15 Bulevardul Primaverii.

Alongside a series of works that featured in the MNAR exhibition from 1968, MARe brings a representative selection of paintings from the Musée national Picasso-Paris, covering Picasso’s work from 1908 to 1972. Picasso’s actuality, also visible in the murals integrated into the exhibition, show that the major figure of modernism entered the idiom of the day and the street. Picasso has achieved his maximum possible effect: he blends into the cultural background noise, globally intelligible. Can a deeper effect be imagined than this (con)melting of the voice of a single creator in the language and pulse of the daily life of our times?, said Erwin Kessler, director of the Bucharest Museum of Recent Art and curator of the exhibition.

Romanian artists exhibited: Corneliu Baba, Horia Bernea, Ștefan Bertalan, Mircea Cantor, Eva Cerbu, Vali Chincișan, Darie Dup, Aniela Firon, Marin Gherasim, Ion Grigorescu, Vasile Gorduz, Dumitru Gorzo, Hortensia Mi Kafchin, Kádár Tibor, Kero Zen, Irlo, Victor Man, Tincuța Marin, M.H.
